Quality Assurance of Subjects 2005
The major outcomes of the Quality Assurance Scheme in 2005 for the units administered by the Department of Zoology are summarized below.

 

Biology 11OF  Organisation and function of cells and organisms
Students rate their satisfaction with this unit highly: overall, 80% of the students considered the quality of the teaching to be consistently high and 95% scored the level of assessment as mainly appropriate. 
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Biology 11AD Animal Diversity
Most students rated this unit highly, with 78% of the students finding the subject interesting.  The large majority (80%) found the practicals relevant and a highlight of the unit.  Overall, the unit was rated highly by 86% of the students.  A review of the practical manual is being undertaken for 2006, in which student expectations and learning goals will be clearer.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Zoology 21ENT Entomology
Most students (94%) expressed overall satisfaction with the unit most or all of the time.  Similar proportions considered the material to be interesting, delivered at the correct pace and in a logical manner.

 

Zoology 21AE Animal Ecology
This unit is well received by students, with the overall satisfaction scoring a 4.3 out of 5; the vast majority of students finding the level of support, help and advice to be exemplary and the workload appropriate.

 

Zoology 22VMP Vertebrate Morphology, Evolution and Comparative Physiology
Though some students felt that this unit covered too many topics, overall most were very positive about the subject (score 4.2/5).  A large proportion of students viewed the material to be delivered in an orderly logical manner and with appropriate lecture guides and handouts (scores >4.0/5).

 

 

 

 

 

CBE211C Issues in Conservation
In general, responses were very positive, with all students assessing teaching quality high all or most of the time. The field course, strongly recommended, is viewed very positively and is a highlight for students

 

 

 

 

 

 

Zoology 31EPA and 32EPB
These units, offered in first and second semester, comprise of a number of components that students may select. Most students find the components offered very interesting and appreciate the excellent support in the Third Year Computer Lab.  Many students appreciate the attention paid to acquiring skills in written and oral presentation, statistical analysis and report writing. Students who elected to undertake the field courses found them extremely rewarding and enjoyable.
