Laboratories
| The
aerp main
laboratory is well equipped and serviced appropriately for metabolic and respiratory
experiments: numerous O2 and CO2
gas
analysers, helium analyzer, CO analyzer, pressure transducers, telemetry temperature
systems, blood gas machines, O2
content analysers, Hemo-scans, Wosthoff pumps, gas blenders, pumps, solenoid flow control
systems, surgical equipment (anaesthetic machines, gas
extraction, surgical microscope), treadmills, swim flumes, 2 computer controlled
walk in constant
temperature rooms, temperature controlled chambers, thermal gradients; drying ovens, water baths,
re-circulated cooling water, piped O2, CO2 and N2
and fume hood. The lab is appropriately
networked and computerized for data acquisition and control, primarily
utilising PowerLab (3 x 8 channel, 4 x 4 channel,
3 x 2 channel). The lab is extensively
supported by electronic and mechanical workshops.

| The aerp
field extension laboratory is located within the Zoology Reserve, a 2 hectare area surrounded by
fox-proof fence. The laboratory maintains a
series of irrigated outdoor enclosures to house the macropod colonies in close proximity
to the field extension lab together with a series of smaller pens for
maintaining reptiles, birds and mammals.. This laboratory
is an ideal location for studies on free-ranging animals within the Zoology
Reserve and the neighbouring Wildlife Reserve (35 hectares of natural bushland). The field extension laboratory is also equipped
for metabolic and respiratory experiments, telemetry studies, surgery, maintains a small
four-wheel drive, has wireless computer access within the enclosures and is linked to the main lab via optic fibre.
The laboratory also has extensive access to animal holding facilities in the
Zoology Annex and Central Animal house.
